A Jewel in the Desert
Beginning as an arm of the Greater Green Valley Arts Council, the Foundation
was formally established in August, 1999, following more than three years of
project planning and organizational activity. This activity is the continuation
of a more than 12-year history of interest and effort to create a performing
arts center.
World renowned architects and engineers developed plans that won numerous
awards. The final facility will fully meet the criteria established a decade
ago. Once completed, it will be a true "Jewel in the Desert."
Serving
residents of the greater Santa Cruz Valley, the Center complex will consist of a
state-of-the-art 500-seat theater, a smaller theater studio, a rehearsal studio,
art gallery, classrooms and support facilities. The Center will provide the only
true public performing arts and education venue between Tucson and Nogales,
attracting quality performers and serving the needs of many local clubs and
organizations.

These needs include:
- Facility appropriate for the needs of the performing arts — specifically
music, theater, ballet/dance and art display
- Legitimate Theater facility — i.e., includes standard components such as
tiered seating (unimpeded sightlines), backstage area, fly gallery, dressing
rooms, proscenium stage, lighting & sound systems, orchestra pit,
appropriate acoustics, box office and lobby
- Rehearsal space — appropriate for specific performance activity
- Chamber theater facility — i.e., appropriate for smaller, more intimate
performances
-
Facility available for greater community utilization
- Suitable facility attracting top-quality performers
- Facility accommodating the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities
- Facility considerate of environmental issues
