* ONGTUPQA - A FilmONGTUPQA - A Film

Time: 7:00 pm

Tickets: $10 in advance – $15 at door Music has the power to connect people to place in a profound way. With the Desert View Watchtower perched on the edge of one of the world’s most important cultural and geographic landscapes, a trio of musicians with strong connections to Grand Canyon recorded music inside the Watchtower on a project called Öngtupqa. Öngtupqa is the Hopi name for Grand Canyon and features the oldest instruments from this corner of the world. Clark Tenakhongva, Gary Stroutsos and Matthew Nelson use their mastery of voice, flute and clay pot percussion to bring the acoustics within the Watchtower to life. Öngtupqa is an acoustic soundscape intended to honor the surrounding landscape through music created on-site that could never be replicated in a studio far from the views and spirit of Grand Canyon. Öngtupqa is the first audio recording within this location, whose architecture is inspired by Ancestral Puebloan ruins.
