* THE KLEZMOPOLITANSTHE KLEZMOPOLITANS

Time: 7:00 pm

Tickets: $15 in advance – $20 at door One of the Southwest’s finest ensembles, the Klezmopolitans, began in 1984 and their name reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the music they play. They specialize in klezmer and Jewish music, but also play jazz standards, classical, Eastern European and gypsy music. Made up of five of Tucson’s most experienced and versatile musicians, the Klezmopolitans have played all across the region including a featured slot at the Western Regional Judaic Studies Conference. Klezmer music is a unique blend of Jewish and Eastern European folk music, but you don’t need to be Jewish to appreciate Klezmer. Klezmer’s danceable rhythms and soulful melodies have delighted audiences since the beginning! Clarinetist Jay Vosk is a founding member of the band. Jay is accomplished on the flute and alto saxophone as well, and is a published composer. He is associate professor in Music Theory at Pima College and has a BM degree in Composition at the Eastman School of Music and a MM degree in Composition at the University of Michigan. In 1996, he was the recipient of the Tucson Pima Arts Council Composer’s Fellowship. Matt Mitchell is a virtuoso jazz guitarist. In 1995, he was the recipient of Tucson Jazz Society’s Young Artist Award and has been honored by the TAMMIES (Tucson Area Music Awards) numerous times, most recently with top standing in the Traditional Jazz Category. As an individual, he was nominated for the Arizona Arts Award sponsored by the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona. Jeff Holsen is Assistant Principal Bassist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and is a graduate in double-bass performance from the University of Arizona. His experience with Eastern European music began as a member of Ochestra Stari Grad in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also performs on the cimbalom, a large hammered dulcimer found in Eastern European gypsy bands. One of Tucson’s busiest violinists, Michael Fan is a member of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson Symphony Piano Trio, as well as Concertmaster of the Tucson Pops Orchestra.
